be kind, don’t rewind

Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense. – RALPH WALDO EMERSON

there is no kinder deed you could do for yourself than forgive yourself, forget your mistakes and just go on. mistakes have a way of haunting and accusing, and the apologies you make become endless until you become sorry for being sorry, and sorry for being alive. sometimes we realise this too late, even though we know and remind ourselves to move on from our mistakes every day. but ghosts have a way of hanging on, and it becomes difficult to stop apologising and to stop being so insecure, and to stop being so sorry.
at the end of the day, we must learn to be kind to ourselves, even when we least deserve it, until we finally deserve it. because there’s nothing more painful than spending your life dwelling with yesterday’s ghosts.
